La Universidad de Málaga es una universidad relativamente nueva en comparación con sus vetustas homólogas. Data de los años 60 y se formó debido a la gran demanda social de los ciudadanos malagueños. Los protagonistas de la lucha por la fundación de la universidad eran importantes personalidades ciudadanos de la capital. que estaban resueltos a formar un centro de educación superior allí. A ellosse los conoce como la Asociación de Amigos de la Universidad de Málaga, creada en 1968. El 18 de agosto de 1972 se firmó el decreto mediante el que se creaba la UMA . En un principio, la universidad sólo se componía de la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y Empresariales, a la que se añadió posteriormente la Facultad de Medicina. Hoy, 25 años después de que se crease, la universidad se ha convertido en el centro cultural de la ciudad porque apoya el desarrollo tecnológico y la investigación que es necesaria para introducir a Málaga en el siglo XXI. La universidad trabaja junto al aeropuerto y también junto al Parque Tecnológico de Andalucía. Por lo tanto, la universidad es una fuente constante de ideas tecnológicas y de graduados que están altamente cualificados en estos campos. Esa es la razón por la que la Universidad de Málaga es muy popular no sólo entre los estudiantes españoles sino también entre los estudiantes internacionales. En 2001 unos 40000 estudiantes se matricularon en esta universidad.



The University of Malaga is a relatively new university in contrast to many of its ancient counterparts in Spain. It dates back to the 1960´s and was formed due to the large social demand made by the citizens of the city. The protagonists that fought for the foundation of this university were important members of the city who were intent on forming a centre for higher education here. These members have been collectively named as the Association of the Friends of the University of Malaga, the University of Malaga itself was finally established in 1968 by a decree that confirmed its establishment on August 18, 1972. At first the University was only comprised of the Faculty of Economic Science and Business but recently they have added the Faculty of Medicine. Today, only 25 years after it was established, the university has become the cultural centre of the city because it supports the technological development and research that is necessary to bring Malaga into the 21st century. The university works in unison with the airport and also the Technological Park of Andalusia. Therefore, it is this university that is the constant source of technological ideas and graduates that are extremely well-qualified in these fields. That is why the University of Malaga is very popular not only among Spanish students but among international students as well. In 2001 approximately 40,000 students enrolled in the university.
